Criminal Justice Students Visit Courtroom of the Honorable Judge Rodney Smith

Juniors from the Coral Reef Criminal Justice program (Tina Cushnie, CJ Instructor) had the opportunity to meet the Honorable Rodney Smith, February 17, 2016 at the Dade County Courthouse, located in Downtown Miami, at 73 West Flagler Street.  Participating students witnessed the justice system in action by observing a court case officiated by Judge Smith.  During a recess, the Judge took the students into his chambers for an intimate rap session, where he spoke candidly with the students about his road to the bench and strategies for success for aspiring leaders in Criminal Justice like themselves.  Judge Smith is an alumnus of Miami Northwestern Senior High School and a Cum Laude graduate of both Florida A&M University and Michigan State University College of Law. Appointed by former Florida Governor Charlie Crist in 2008 at the age of 33, this young Judge already has a distinguished legal career having served as a Division Chief in the Juvenile Division and as a Career Criminal/Robbery Prosecutor in the Felony Division. We are so pleased to add the Honorable Rodney Smith to our list of partner mentors for our CTE Criminal Justice Program.

Felix Varela High School is one of eleven schools to win First Amendment Press Freedom Award

A committee with representatives from the Journalism Education Association, National Scholastic Press Association and Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society chose more First Amendment Press Freedom Award-winners for 2016 than ever before. The 11 winners were almost double the 2015 total. This is the 16th year for the award.

The award recognizes public high schools that actively support, teach and protect First Amendment rights and responsibilities of students and teachers, with an emphasis on student-run media where students make all final decisions of content.

The award winning schools will be honored April 14, 2016 at the opening ceremony of the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Los Angeles.

“We’re pleased to have so many more winners this year than last, and we hope that encourages other schools that value the First Amendment to apply next year,” John Bowen, JEA Scholastic Press Rights Committee chairman, said.
First round applications are due annually by Dec. 15. Downloadable applications for 2017 will be available on the JEA website in the fall.
